State Of Play, starting Jan 7th, is a brand new Thursday evening music magazine programme bringing together the best in music with discussion that promises to be insightful, witty and unpredictable. Hosted by Phil Udell, the show will be a weekly hour long exploration of not only the latest releases but also musical history, the latest news and random topics and themes!
Each week, Phil will be joined by two guests - one taken from a group of regular contributers that includes John Joe Worrall, Jennifer Gannon and Niall Byrne (Nialler9), the other from the music world at large - be it artists or industry and media figures. Together, they will debate three of the week's new album releases as well as the latest developments, trends, news or whatever takes their fancy. The monthly 'Play & Tell' feature will see a guest (or Phil!) introducing us to a gem from their own record collection, be it a long lost classic or a personal gem. Audience interaction will form a large part of the programme so do get in touch text 51051, email

Phil is off to the Field Day festival this week so Johnnie Craig steps into the breach for this week's show, joined by Jennifer Gannon and Ruan Van Vilet, head honcho of the marvellous Popical Island record label. Together they'll be reviewing the latest albums from The Coral, Best Coast and Perfume Genius.
Elsewhere they'll be discussing the week's music news, including the great Kings Of Leon pigeon unpleasantness, previewing the week ahead and finding out from Ruan just how he's created the most perfect independent pop label in Ireland.

Joining me on State of Play this week are Phantom's own Johnnie Craig and Daniel Carroll from State.ie. Together we'll be reviewing new albums from Richard Ashcroft & The United Nations of Sound (crikey), the hushed return of Bombay Bicycle Club and Wavves (crazy name, crazy guy).
We'll also be looking back on the epic history of Sub Pop Records, from the early days of grunge to their resurgence with Fleet Foxes and The Shins. For those of a certain age, this will surely get your pulses racing....
In addition we'll be discussing the great Blink 182 vs Jedward stand off, the Mercury Music Prize nominations, giving our pick of the week ahead and looking for your tenuous links with pop and rock stars.

We'll also be looking back at the history of Sub Pop records, discussing the week's music news (including Blink 182 vs Jedward and the nominations for this Mercury Music Prize) and giving you our pick of the week ahead. Plus I want to know if you have a tenuous link with a pop or rock star.

01 April 2010
On tonight's State of Play, Johnnie Craig is in for Phil Udell, with guests Jennifer Gannon, Chris Robotnik and John Hanley of Cowboy X.
Albums by Doves, Dum Dum Girls and We Have Band reviewed, plus (as it's April Fool's day) we're talking Great Rock 'n' Roll Myths - those enduring tales of rock star excess and madness we all want to believe but can't always be sure of.
Plus, Ageing Rock Stars - which stars are blossoming into old age and which are in utter rag order?
Please join us, 7pm-8pm.
The best decade of Irish music? You decide...

08 March 2010
Given that St Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us, this week on the show we’ll be running a special debate to decide what was the best decade for Irish music; 70s. 80s, 90s or 00s. Four guests – JP O’Malley from State.ie, agent Vinny Ryan, Jamie Fox from Fight Like Apes and Take The Money And Run’s Neil Dooley – will be in to make an impassioned plea for their chosen era. Phantom listeners will get the chance to vote by clicking your decade of choice in the box just to your right there...
Will it be this?
Or this?
Maybe this?
Or even this?
We can argue all we want (ie a lot) but the outcome is up to you. Get voting now...
